Gifts for someone who has everything: start with the kitchen

Everyone has one person on their list who is impossible to buy for. They have the gadgets, the clothes, the books. If they want something, they buy it themselves. Every year you stand in a shop holding something they definitely do not need.

The answer is to stop buying them things and start buying them things to use up. And the best room in the house for that is the kitchen.

Why the kitchen works

  • There is always room. A shelf of books is full. A cupboard of oil, spices and coffee empties itself every few weeks.
  • Everyone eats. Even people who rarely cook make toast, dress a salad or fry an egg.
  • It upgrades something they already do. You are not adding a new habit. You are making an everyday moment a little better.
  • It is the thing people rarely treat themselves to. Many people will spend freely on a jacket and still buy the cheapest oil on the shelf. A better version is a real treat.

The principle: upgrade the everyday

Think about the things they use every single day and find the best version of one of them. Not the most expensive. The best. A gift like this gets noticed every time they use it, which is the opposite of the gift that sits in a drawer.

Some everyday things that are worth upgrading:

  1. Olive oil. The one ingredient that goes on almost everything. A bottle of extra virgin from a named place, with a date on the label, tells them exactly what they are pouring, which a generic supermarket blend often does not.
  2. Salt. A box of flaky sea salt for finishing food. Small, cheap, and it changes how a plate tastes.
  3. Pepper. Whole peppercorns from a specialist, with a good mill if they do not have one.
  4. Coffee. A bag of beans from a small roaster they have not tried.
  5. Vinegar. A proper bottle for dressings, to sit next to the oil.
  6. A tea towel. Heavy linen, plain colour. Few people buy good tea towels for themselves.

Give a place, not just a product

People who have everything often like a story more than a thing. A food gift from a specific place carries one. They get to taste somewhere they may never have been, and tell other people about it.

Dukat Olives is extra virgin olive oil from Dukat, a village in Vlorë county, Albania, between the mountains and the sea. For someone whose cupboard is full of Italian and Spanish bottles, an oil from Albania is a genuine change. Write a line about the place on the card, and the gift is a small trip as well as a bottle.

Make it personal

A food gift can feel generic if you just hand it over. A few ways to make it unmistakably for them:

  • Add a recipe in your handwriting. Something you actually cook, that uses the gift.
  • Pair it with their habits. If they bake, add an olive oil cake recipe. If they love a long breakfast, add good bread and a tomato grater.
  • Cook it for them. Bring the bottle and make dinner with it. The meal is the gift; the bottle stays behind.
  • Make it last. Give two bottles: one to open now, one waiting in the cupboard for when the first runs out.

What to avoid

  • Kitchen gadgets. Single-use tools take up drawer space and often get forgotten after the first week.
  • Huge hampers. Lots of filler, little that they would have chosen. One very good thing beats ten average ones.
  • Anything novelty. Funny aprons and joke mugs are for people who do not have everything. Your person will smile and put it away.

How to present it

For someone who has everything, presentation matters. Wrap the bottle in a linen tea towel tied with string, so the wrap is a gift too. Tuck in a sprig of rosemary and a handwritten tag. Keep it simple and well made, which is exactly what they like about their own things.

We are developing gift boxes for our bottle. They are not available yet.

For now, start with The Bottle or The Pair. It is the rare gift they will use up, and then wish they had more of.
